Bonhoeffer’s Glasses – Seeing the World with Courage and Care for Others

During the 11th Festival of Protestant Culture, themed “Being for Others,” participants took part in a light-hearted yet meaningful photographic project called “Bonhoeffer’s Glasses.” This initiative invited people to “see the world through Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s eyes.”

Throughout various festival events—including lectures, walks, concerts, and discussions—dozens of portraits were taken of participants wearing round glasses inspired by Bonhoeffer’s iconic look. The result is a vibrant collage of faces that captures the diversity, joy, and openness that characterized this year’s festival.

This project has a rich tradition. The first collage of “Bonhoeffer’s Glasses” was created ten years ago during the 2015 Bonhoeffer Days organized by EWST. Reviving the idea in 2025 allowed us to reconnect with this earlier initiative and highlight its relevance to today’s theme: “Being for Others.”

Participants received printed copies of the collage, and digital versions—along with individual photos from those who consented to publication—are also available online through the festival’s website and social media channels.

“Bonhoeffer’s Glasses” reflects the essence of this year’s message: seeing others with attention, respect, and openness, and rediscovering how much perspective matters in building a sense of community.
