We are pleased to announce that Prof. Wojciech Szczerba, President of the Evangelical School of Theology (EWST) in Wrocław, has been awarded the national academic title of Professor in the humanities in the discipline of philosophy.
In Poland, the title of Professor is the highest academic distinction awarded at the national level. It is conferred by the President of the Republic of Poland on scholars with outstanding academic achievements following a formal professorial procedure. Unlike in the United States, where “professor” usually refers to an academic position, in Poland the title of Professor is a separate national distinction and is not connected to a particular university.
“I receive this news with great joy and gratitude. I would like to thank everyone who has supported me over the years in my academic, teaching, and leadership work. I also see this as an important moment for the entire EWST community,” said Prof. Wojciech Szczerba.
Prof. Szczerba is a theologian and philosopher. He graduated from the Biblical Theological Seminary in Wrocław, the Christian Theological Academy in Warsaw, and the University of Wrocław, where he studied philosophy. He also completed further studies in Amsterdam and Heverlee, Belgium. He received his PhD in philosophy from the University of Wrocław in 2000 and his habilitation in ancient philosophy in 2009.
Prof. Szczerba has been part of the EWST community for many years. He became Dean in 2002 and has served as President of EWST since 2006. He is also Editor-in-Chief of Theologica Wratislaviensia. Since 2019, he has been affiliated with St Edmund’s College, University of Cambridge—first as a Research Associate and Senior Research Associate at the Von Hügel Institute, and since 2025 as a Visiting Scholar.
His research focuses on the philosophy of religion, early Christianity, ecumenism, hospitality, and questions of human dignity and community. He is the author of numerous publications in philosophy, theology, and the history of ideas. In 2018, he received the Silver Cross of Merit for his work on behalf of national and religious minorities in Poland.
The award of the national title of Professor is an important milestone in Prof. Szczerba’s academic career and a proud moment for the entire EWST community. We warmly congratulate him and wish him every success in his future academic, teaching, and leadership work.
